The French Royal Academy of Sciences was founded by King Louis XIV in 1666 at the instigation of his minister, Jean-Baptiste Colbert : ' Colbert selected a small group of scholars who gathered on december 22nd, 1666 in the King's Library, newly established in rue Vivienne in Paris, and went on to hold twice-weekly work sessions '. This was the first meeting of the group, which comprised seven mathematician-surveyors, a physician, six doctors of medicine, four astronomers, two anatomists, and a botanist.
One of the projects undertaken by this brand new Academy was to compile a compendium of knowledge about plants in a volume entitled 'Histoire des Plantes'.
